A “greener” chapter is on the horizon for Marston Middle School students. Students joined San Diego Unified and City of San Diego leaders Thursday to mark the start of their campus modernization that will transform the Marston Middle campus in Clairemont.

San Diego Unified School District Board of Education Vice President Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne and Interim Superintendent Dr. Lamont Jackson will join former San Diego City Councilmember Marti Emerald, students, staff and the community in celebrating the opening of two joint-use fields that will bring much needed park space to the growing neighborhood of Rolando Park.

Students at Baker Elementary School demonstrated their STEAM skills at a new SmartLab today, showcasing one of the San Diego Unified School District’s newest high-tech learning spaces before an audience of industry mentors who helped develop the facility.

On Monday, students joined district and community leaders at the newly renamed Canyon Hills High School, translated into Mat Kwatup KunKun in native Kumeyaay, to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a now federally observed holiday that commemorates Native American history and cultures.

As construction on a new elementary school in Mission Valley quickly progresses, the San Diego Unified School Names Committee has launched a community input process to select a name for the new elementary school.

SAN DIEGO - Preparations are underway to add state-of-the art facilities and other campus wide improvements at three schools in La Jolla and University City. At La Jolla Elementary School (LJES), construction crews have started demolishing dated portables and installing temporary student classrooms at the school’s upper field to make way for a modern new classroom building.

Just a few short weeks before students return to in-person learning, the final steel beam for Crawford High School’s new three-story classroom, student services, and performing arts building will be hoisted into place. Before it is hoisted into place, staff, students, and alumni will take turns in signing the beam. All activity will be socially distanced.

Modern times call for modern buildings. What were once aging facilities in City Heights are now completely rebuilt, revamped, and recognizable landmarks.

While Pacific Beach Middle School staff and students are teaching and learning online, construction milestones are being reached on their new state-of-the-art classroom building. The final steel beam was hoisted into place in late October on the new two-story classroom facility, which will include 26 classrooms with modern technology and designated collaborative spaces.

SAN DIEGO - The Crawford High cheer team joined a guitarist and cellist, along with their new principal and school alumni, on Wednesday to celebrate the groundbreaking for the first of three phases on their entire site transformation.

WHAT: Second-grader Jameson Thornton will be Principal for the Day at Foster Elementary School. The winner of this year’s silent auction fundraiser, Jameson will start his day by welcoming students at the front gate as they arrive to school. He will spend the day visiting classrooms and the library/STEM Lab, observing students and teachers work on projects. “Principal” Thornton will also read a book to kindergarten students and give the entire student body a surprise extra 15-minute recess.
